“Experience gained abroad promotes tolerance - the ability to accept people as they are, without prejudice.”
With Wiesbaden International the city has set itself the goal of preparing children and adolescents for life in a globalized world. The aim is to offer adolescents the opportunity to gain experience of life in other countries.

“The more normal it becomes to meet people from other countries, the less likely it is that people will regard unfamiliar cultures as posing a danger.”
Peter Bartholomäus, patron of Wiesbaden International.

CONNECTING TEENAGERS WITH THE WORLD
With Wiesbaden International the city has set itself the goal of preparing children and adolescents for life in a globalised world. The aim is to offer adolescents the opportunity to gain experience of life in other countries. Well-planned, accompanied encounters and exchange programmes between adolescents from different countries are designed to awaken their interest in making new discoveries. They alter the way participants view the world, allowing them to experience history at first hand and enabling them to develop a broader perspective. In so doing, they contribute to a more open-minded atmosphere in the young peoples’ own city.

This requires close collaboration between committed partners in education, politics, business and civil society. The older adults must actively promote a democratic, supportive community, create workable support structures and framework conditions, and act as role models.
Individual counselling
A range of different counselling and support measures help adolescents in the process of gaining experience of other countries. Anyone wanting to find out more about what offers are available is welcome to contact the Eurodesk advice centre in Wiesbaden. Advice on voluntary service abroad is provided by evim. For more information on the European Solidarity Corps, founded in 2019, contact arco e.V.
Internationalisation of education
The IndA (“Internationalisation of Education”) project advises local companies and supports work placements abroad for young trainees. Trainees who are interested in spending time working abroad as part of their training are also offered advice and information.
Qualification of specialists
We work to provide needs-oriented qualification of specialists in international youth work, through regular further training measures and workshops (e.g. in the field of digital methods, learning about democracy, sustainability, etc.). In 2021, together with our network partners in the Haus am Maiberg and the Stadtjugendring (city youth organisation), we offered a basic course in how to organise youth encounters.
Strategic development
In an interdisciplinary network of colleagues from international youth work institutions operating throughout Germany, together with colleagues from the social welfare department and the office for municipal international relations, local, federal and cross-border developments in international youth work are discussed, with the aim of strengthening Wiesbaden’s ties in other countries and developing an international strategy.
International youth encounters
In Wiesbaden, youth organisations, as well as youth employment support, parent support and school social services are working together to organise international youth encounters, in particular for adolescents aged 13 and over. The encounters take place in European countries such as Poland, Spain, Austria and Greece, as well as in Israel, China and Germany.

Newsletter
We are constantly working to make it possible for even more adolescents to gain experience of life in other countries. We publish the latest developments in our regular newsletter, available on www.wiesbaden.de.
